Bastion BF (“Bastion”) is a 2021 Polish Arabian stallion whose pedigree brings together two historically important branches of the oldest Polish sire line in the world. It was established by the stallion, Bairactar, foaled in 1813 in Syria, and imported to Europe by the King of Wurttenberg in 1817.
Through his sire, Safari CAHR, Bastion descends from Amurath Sahib, an historically important direct descendant of Bairactar, through one of his two sons, Gwarny. Amurath Sahib, as well as other historical stallions in Bastion’s pedigree, like Ofir – are legendary names that helped shape the Polish Arabian into beautiful, athletic, functional riding horses and chosen mounts for generations of the famed Polish cavalry officers.
Through his dam, Evangelion AD, Bastion carries the blood of the other Amurath Sahib son, Arax, which flowed from Nabeg to Tallin to Wojsław to Emanor, her sire -- representing the other branch of the Bairactar sire line.
When Poland exhibited Arax at the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition in Moscow in 1958, he was admired by the Soviet breeders for his structure and type, and subsequently was acquired by the TerskState Stud through a trade -- undoubtedly influenced by political and economic pressure behind the Iron Curtain. He was then permanently transferred to the state stud at Stavropol Krai, the USSR's primary Arabian breeding farm at that time. Another of Bastion’s ancestors, the previously mentioned historically important stallion, Ofir, also had been taken from Poland to Tersk after the 1939 invasion of Poland by the Soviet Union -- so, many of the horses that contributed to the success of Russian horses from that time on were bred in Poland or previous Polish territory.
The two sons of Amurath Sahib, Gwarny and Arax - three-quarter brothers out of Ofir granddaughters - were the only direct line male descendants of Bairactar to survive and carry on his bloodline.
Bastion is a result of Polish-bred (western Europe) – Russian-bred (eastern Europe) Polish Arabian horse reunification, and his pedigree undoes, in small part, to what had occurred prior, during and after World War II, a time when so many of the original Polish Arabian breeding stock were lost.
Bastion brings the heritage of both the Polish and Russian-bred Polish Arabian horses back to the current era, providing a genetically-strong link to the original Polish Arabian type through genetic recombination.
While most modern Arabian breeding has moved toward international fashion fads and extreme halter traits, Bastion is different. His bloodlines protect a version of the Polish Arabian that is rapidly vanishing: one that is beautiful and elegant, balanced, rideable, strong-boned and mentally steady with a kind and honest character. These are not accidental features. They are the visible result of generations of careful breeding now at risk of being lost.
Conservation Genetics in Action:
Bastion BF functions as a genetic recovery point. Through thoughtful breeding to carefully selected purebred Arabian mares, he can:
Protecting and insuring that Bastion survives and flourishes means protecting a piece of equine history that cannot be recreated once gone.
